Aga Khan Trust for Culture

Suad Amiry is a conservation architect, writer, and a political and social activist living between New York City and Ramallah, Palestine. She studied architecture at the American University of Beirut, Lebanon, received a Master of Urban Planning degree from the University of Michigan and holds a Ph.D. from the University of Edinburgh, Scotland.&nbsp;Amiry, who has taught architecture at the University of Jordan and Birzeit University, is the author of numerous books and articles on architecture. She is the founder of Riwaq: Centre for Architecture Conservation, a cultural heritage NGO based in Ramallah, which focuses on urban renewal and rehabilitation projects in historic neighbourhoods as vehicles for poverty alleviation, job creation and the social and economic development of marginalized groups, especially women and children in rural Palestine. Riwaq has won numerous international awards including the Prince Claus Award (2011), the Curry Stone Design Prize (2012), and the Aga Khan Award for Architecture (2013). Amiry is also the author of three works of literary nonfiction: an internationally-acclaimed memoir,&nbsp;Sharon and My Mother in Law&nbsp;(Random House, 2005), which has been translated into twenty languages and won the Italian Premio Viareggio (2004);&nbsp;Nothing to Lose But Your Life: An 18-hour Journey with Murad&nbsp;(Bloomsbury, 2010); and&nbsp;Golda Slept Here&nbsp;(Bloomsbury, 2015) which won the Nonino prize in Italy.

 Emre Arolat is the design partner of EAA-Emre Arolat Architecture, founded with Gonca Paşolar in 2004 as the continuation of an architectural practice that began when he started as an associate designer at his parents&rsquo; studio, Arolat Architects, in 1987. Since that time, he has completed an extraordinary body of work. EAA is now an internationally recognised practice with offices in New York, London and Istanbul. It works on a wide range of projects, from urban master plans and airports to residential and cultural buildings and workplaces.

 Mr Arolat teaches and lectures widely both within Turkey and internationally. In 2017 he was Norman R. Foster Visiting Professor at the Yale School of Architecture, where he taught an Advanced Studio during the fall semester. He has lectured at La Cit&eacute; de l&rsquo;Architecture et du Patrimoine in Paris (2017), at the Pratt Institute in New York (2014), and taught a studio at The Berlage Institute in Delft (2014). Mr. Arolat was the co-curator, in collaboration with the Istanbul Foundation for Culture and Arts (IKSV), of the first&nbsp;Istanbul Design Biennale&nbsp;in 2012. He was awarded a professorship by the International Academy of Architecture in 2015.
 EAA received international attention early on with the Minicity Theme Park (2004), which was selected by the&nbsp;Mies van der Rohe Award for European Architecture. Many international awards have followed, including the&nbsp;Aga&nbsp;Khan Award for Architecture&nbsp;in 2010 for the Ipekyol Textile Factory in Edirne. EAA&rsquo;s work has been published in the monograph&nbsp;Context and Plurality&nbsp;(Rizzoli), edited by Philip Jodidio and Suha &Ouml;zkan. EAA&rsquo;s projects have been shown in various exhibitions at institutions, including the Design Museum, the Royal Academy of Arts and the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) in London. In 2012 and 2016, they were presented at the International Architecture Biennale in Venice. Mr. Arolat served on the Aga&nbsp;Khan Award for Architecture Master Jury in 2016 and as a Steering Committee member in 2019.

Akeel Bilgrami is the Sydney Morgenbesser Professor of Philosophy and at Columbia University in New York, where he is also a Professor on the Committee on Global Thought. He was the Director of the Humanities Center at Columbia University for seven years and is currently the Director of its South Asian Institute. Bilgrami got a Bachelor&rsquo;s degree in English Literature from Elphinstone College, Bombay University and went to Oxford University as a Rhodes Scholar where he read Philosophy, Politics, and Economics.&nbsp;He has a PhD in Philosophy from the University of Chicago. Bilgrami is the President of the Board of Trustees and Editors of the Journal of Philosophy and also the Chair of the Publications Board of Columbia University Press. His own publications include the books&nbsp;Belief and Meaning&nbsp;(1992),&nbsp;Self-Knowledge and Resentment&nbsp;(2006), and&nbsp;Secularism, Identity and Enchantment&nbsp;(2014) as well as over a hundred scholarly articles; he has also edited various books including&nbsp;Democratic Culture&nbsp;(2011),&nbsp;Who&rsquo;s Afraid of Academic Freedom&nbsp;(2014),&nbsp;Beyond the Secular West&nbsp;(2016, forthcoming). He is due to publish two short books in the near future:&nbsp;What is a Muslim?&nbsp;and&nbsp;Gandhi&rsquo;s Integrity. His long-term future work is on the relations between agency, value, rationality and politics.

Luis Fern&aacute;ndez-Galiano is an architect, a professor at the School of Architecture of Madrid&rsquo;s Universidad Polit&eacute;cnica, and the editor (since 1985) of the journals&nbsp;AV/Arquitectura Viva. He writes for the Spanish newspaper&nbsp;El Pa&iacute;s, where from 1993 to 2006 he was in charge of the weekly architecture page. He is a member of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts (Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando) and the Royal Academy of Doctors (Real Academia de Doctores de Espa&ntilde;a), and an International Fellow of the Royal Istitute of British Architects.He has served as the Cullinan Professor at Rice University, Franke Fellow at Yale University, a visiting scholar at the Getty Center in Los Angeles, and a visiting critic at Princeton, Harvard and the Berlage Institute. Fern&aacute;ndez-Galiano chaired the international architecture congresses &ldquo;More for Less&rdquo; (2010) and &ldquo;The Common&rdquo; (2012). He was president of the jury in the 9th Venice Architecture Biennale, expert and juror of the Mies van der Rohe European Award, and has served on numerous competition juries internationally. He has curated several exhibitions including&nbsp;El espacio privado,&nbsp;Extreme Eurasia&nbsp;(in Tokyo and in Madrid),&nbsp;Bucky Fuller &amp; Spaceship Earth and Jean Prouv&eacute;: Industrial Beauty&nbsp;(the last two with Norman Foster), as well as&nbsp;Spain mon amour&nbsp;(in the 13th Venice Architecture Biennale and in Madrid) and&nbsp;The Architect is Present. Among his books are&nbsp;La Quimera Moderna,&nbsp;Fire and Memory,&nbsp;Spain Builds and Atlas,&nbsp;Architectures of the 21st Century, a series of four volumes.

Hameed Haroon is Chief Executive Officer of Herald Publications, publishers of the Dawn Group of Newspapers, one of the oldest and most prestigious media companies in Pakistan. He was instrumental in establishing Dawn News, a television news channel in English, and has also made significant contributions to the development of popular radio in Pakistan. Haroon was educated at the London School of Economics and at Harvard and Boston universities.Haroon is a collector and patron of the arts, and an active promoter of cultural heritage preservation, arts and literature, as well as education, health and environmental programmes. He is President (since 2001) of the All Pakistan Newspapers Society; a trustee of Mohatta Palace Gallery Trust and Museum, Karachi&rsquo;s leading gallery and cultural complex; a trustee of the Endowment Fund Trust for Preservation of the Culture of Sindh; and a member of the Government of Sindh&rsquo;s Advisory Committee on Heritage. He has curated several exhibitions including,&nbsp;Sadequain: The Holy Sinner&nbsp;(2002),&nbsp;Jewel in the Crown &ndash; Karachi under the Raj&nbsp;1843-1947 (2004) and&nbsp;Labyrinth of Reflections&nbsp;(2013), a retrospective of the artist Rashid Rana. Haroon lectures widely on the arts, culture and journalism. He holds a number of regional and international awards, including an Institute of Architects of Pakistan Award (1984) for his contributions in highlighting and preserving Pakistan&rsquo;s architecture. He is the recipient of two of Pakistan&rsquo;s most prestigious civil awards: the&nbsp;Sitara-e-Imtiaz&nbsp;(2004) and the&nbsp;Hilal-e-Imtiaz&nbsp;(2012).

Professor Lesley Lokko OBE is the founder and director of the African Futures Institute (AFI) in Accra, Ghana. She holds a BSc(Arch), MArch and PhD in Architecture from the Bartlett School of Architecture, University College London. She was the founder and director of the Graduate School of Architecture, University of Johannesburg (2014-2019) and the Dean of Architecture at the Bernard &amp; Anne Spitzer School of Architecture (2019-2020). She is the editor of White Papers, Black Marks: Race, Culture, Architecture (University of Minnesota Press, 2000) and the editor-in-chief of FOLIO: Journal of Contemporary African Architecture.

In 2004, she made the successful transition from academic to novelist with the publication of her first novel, Sundowners (Orion 2004) and has since followed with 12 further bestsellers, which have been translated into 15 languages. She is a founding member of the UN-Habitat Council on Urban Initiatives; was a member of the 17th International Jury of the Venice Architecture Biennale; is a trustee of the London-based Architecture Foundation, the Clean Air Fund and the London Centre for Humanities. She has lectured and published widely on the subject of &ldquo;race&rdquo; and its relationship to architecture, particularly architectural education.

In 2021, Professor Lokko was awarded the RIBA Annie Spink Award for Excellence in Education and in 2021, the Ada Louise Huxtable Prize for Contributions to Architecture. She is a guest editor of the UCL Design Research in Architecture publication series and an honorary fellow of the Royal Incorporation of Architects in Scotland. She was recently awarded France&rsquo;s Grande M&eacute;daille de l&rsquo;Acad&eacute;mie d&rsquo;Architecture.

She is currently a visiting professor at the Bartlett School of Architecture, University College Dublin and has held visiting professorships at the Cooper Union, NYC and University of Virginia. She was appointed Curator of the 18th International Architecture Biennale at La Biennale di Venezia, which opened on 20 May 2023. In January 2023, she was awarded an OBE &ldquo;for services to architecture and education&rdquo; in King Charles&rsquo; New Year&rsquo;s Honours List.

Professor Lokko served on the Master Jury for the Aga Khan Award for Architecture in 2016.

An architect and educator, Mohsen Mostafavi is Dean of the Harvard University Graduate School of Design and the Alexander and Victoria Wiley Professor of Design. He was formerly the Gale and Ira Drukier Dean of the College of Architecture, Art and Planning at Cornell University, prior to which he served as the Chairman of the Architectural Association School of Architecture in London.&nbsp;He has taught at numerous institutions including the University of Pennsylvania, University of Cambridge and the Frankfurt Academy of Fine Arts (St&auml;delschule). Mostafavi served on the Steering Committee of the Aga Khan Award for Architecture from 2001 to 2013, and has served on the design committees of the London Development Agency (LDA) and the RIBA Gold Medal. He is a consultant on a number of international architectural and urban design projects, including a recent collaboration on the major technology park Skolkovo Innovation Center in Skolkovo, Russia; the Greenway Campus Project at Amherst College; and campus design at Weifang University. He was co-curator of the 5th China International Architectural Biennial 2013 in Beijing and the 2015 Shanghai Urban Space Art Season Main Exhibition Pavilion. Dominique Perrault is a French architect and planner and the founder of Dominique Perrault Architecture in Paris. He studied architecture at the Ecole Sup&eacute;rieure des Beaux-Arts and town planning at the Ecole Sup&eacute;rieure des Ponts et Chauss&eacute;es in Paris, he also has a postgraduate degree in History from the Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales. He gained international recognition after winning the competition for the Biblioth&egrave;que Nationale de France in 1989 (completed in 1995) at the age of 36, for which he received the Mies van der Rohe Prize in 1997.&nbsp;This project marked the starting point of many other public and private commissions abroad. Perrault&rsquo;s large and distinguished body of work includes The Velodrome and Olympic swimming pool of Berlin (1999); the extension of the European Court of Justice in Luxembourg (2008); the campus of Ewha Womans University in Seoul (2008); and the Fukoku Tower in Osaka (2010). Perrault is Professor at the Ecole Polytechnique F&eacute;d&eacute;rale of Lausanne (Switzerland), and lectures widely in France and abroad. In 2012 he became member of the Conseil scientifique de l&rsquo;Atelier International du Grand Paris. Perrault was awarded the Gold Medal by the French Academy of Architecture in 2010 and in 2015 he was awarded with the Praemium Imperiale Prize for Architecture for his achievements by the Japan Art Association.

Hossein Rezai is an Iranian structural engineer and Director of Web Structures, a design consulting firm based in Singapore that he founded in 1996, which has been involved in the design and realization of structures in over 26 countries. Rezai has a PhD in Structural Engineering from the University of Westminster for his work on reinforced and prestressed concrete structures, after which he conducted post-doctoral research on the assessment and upgrading of existing structures.&nbsp;A passionate advocate of a holistic approach to architecture and structure, Rezai is one of the initiators of the concept of &ldquo;fusion engineering&rdquo;, to help reconcile the seemingly contradictory agendas of good design, low carbon footprint, and cost efficiency. In addition to his work on the design and development of numerous projects in the United Kingdom, Southeast Asia and elsewhere, Rezai is involved in teaching at the School of Architecture at the National University of Singapore, and was a visiting lecturer at the School of Architecture and Engineering at the University of Westminster. He is a regular speaker at conferences and seminars and has published a number of technical papers in journals internationally.
