<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">His Late Highness Prince Karim Aga Khan IV was the founder of the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN) and the 49th hereditary Imam (spiritual leader) of the Shia Ismaili Muslims. </span>In Islam&rsquo;s ethical tradition, religious leaders not only interpret the faith but also have a responsibility to help improve the quality of life in their community and in the societies amongst which they live. <span style="font-weight: 400;">For him, one manifestation of his hereditary responsibilities was a deep engagement with development for more than 60 years.</span></p>
<p>His Late Highness Aga Khan IV established the Aga Khan Award for Architecture and became Chairman of its Steering Committee in 1977. Subsequently, he founded the Aga Khan Program for Islamic Architecture at Harvard and MIT (1979) and the Aga Khan Trust for Culture (1988), which now includes the Aga Khan Historic Cities Programme, Aga Khan Music Programme, Aga Khan Museum and the Education Programme. Other AKDN agencies are also active in the field of the built and natural environment, such as the Aga Khan Agency for Habitat, which works to mitigate the threat posed by natural disasters and climate change.</p>
<p>His interest and patronage in architecture was recognised by numerous professional institutions, who have bestowed upon him their highest honours and medals, including:</p>
<ul>
<li>the American Institute of Architects, USA (1984);</li>
<li>the Royal Institute of British Architects (1991);</li>
<li>International Union of Architects (2001);</li>
<li>the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada (2013); and</li>
<li>the Architectural League of New York (2017).</li>
</ul>
<p>He was honoured for his work in preserving cultural heritage, including:</p>
<ul>
<li>the Hadrian Award from the World Monuments Fund (1996);</li>
<li>the Vincent Scully Prize from the National Building Museum (2005); and</li>
<li>the Urban Land Institute&rsquo;s J.C. Nichols Prize for Visionaries in Urban Development (2011).</li>
</ul>
<p>In addition, he has received honorary citizenships from cities as varied as Granada, Samarkand and Timbuktu, as well as many other awards, decorations and honorary degrees.</p>

<p>H.E. Sheikha Mai Bint Mohammed Al Khalifa is chairperson of the Governing Board of Arab Regional Center for World Heritage. She previously served as President of the Bahrain Authority for Culture and Antiquities from 2014 to 2022 and Minister of Culture from 2010 to 2014, Minister of Culture and Information from 2008 to 2010, and Assistant Undersecretary for Culture and National Heritage at the Ministry of Information.</p>

<p>Sheikha Mai is the founder of the Shaikh Ebrahim bin Mohammed Al Khalifa Center for Culture and Research, and President of its Board of Trustees. An NGO that was established in Muharraq in 2002, the Centre has since hosted over 500 speakers, philosophers, poets and thinkers, who have presented their thoughts in the weekly lecture programme.&nbsp; It has conserved and rehabilitated over 25 traditional Bahraini houses and spearheaded the urban regeneration of the historic city of Muharraq.&nbsp; Under Sheikha Mai&rsquo;s patronage and leadership the Revitalization of Murrraq received the 2019 Aga Khan Award for Architecture.</p>

<p>She was listed as <em>One of the 50 Most Influential Women in the Arab World</em> by <em>Forbes</em> magazine in 2008. She was awarded the <em>Watch Award</em> by the World Monument Fund in 2015 &ndash; the first Arab personality to receive the award &ndash; in recognition of the singular role she has played in the preservation and protection of culture and heritage in Bahrain. &nbsp;In 2017 she was made Special Ambassador of the International Year of Sustainable Tourism for Development by the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO).</p>

<p>Sheikha Mai has published a number of books and articles including <em>Charles Belgrave: Biography and Diary</em> (The Arab Publication Establishment, 2000), <em>100 Years of Education in Bahrain: The Early Years of Establishment</em> (The Arab Publication Establishment, 1999), <em>Mohammed Bin Khalifa 1813&ndash;1890: The Legend and the Parallel History</em> (Shaikh Ebrahim Center for Culture &amp; Research, 2014) and <em>The Qarmations: From Concept to State</em> (Shaikh Ebrahim Center for Culture &amp; Research, 2019), among others. She received a master&rsquo;s in political history from Sheffield University, United Kingdom.</p>

        <p><span>Emre Arolat is the design partner of EAA-Emre Arolat Architecture, founded with Gonca Paşolar in 2004 as the continuation of an architectural practice that began when he started as an associate designer at his parents&rsquo; studio, Arolat Architects, in 1987. Since that time, he has completed an extraordinary body of work. EAA is now an internationally recognised practice with offices in New York, London and Istanbul. It works on a wide range of projects, from urban master plans and airports to residential and cultural buildings and workplaces.</span></p>

    <p><span>Mr Arolat teaches and lectures widely both within Turkey and internationally. In 2017 he was Norman R. Foster Visiting Professor at the Yale School of Architecture, where he taught an Advanced Studio during the fall semester. He has lectured at La Cit&eacute; de l&rsquo;Architecture et du Patrimoine in Paris (2017), at the Pratt Institute in New York (2014), and taught a studio at The Berlage Institute in Delft (2014). Mr. Arolat was the co-curator, in collaboration with the Istanbul Foundation for Culture and Arts (IKSV), of the first&nbsp;</span><i><span>Istanbul Design Biennale</span></i><span>&nbsp;in 2012. He was awarded a professorship by the International Academy of Architecture in 2015.</span></p>
    <p><span>EAA received international attention early on with the Minicity Theme Park (2004), which was selected by the&nbsp;</span><i><span>Mies van der Rohe Award for European Architecture</span></i><span>. Many international awards have followed, including the&nbsp;</span><i><span>Aga&nbsp;Khan Award for Architecture</span></i><span>&nbsp;in 2010 for the Ipekyol Textile Factory in Edirne. EAA&rsquo;s work has been published in the monograph&nbsp;</span><i><span>Context and Plurality</span></i><span>&nbsp;(Rizzoli), edited by Philip Jodidio and Suha &Ouml;zkan. EAA&rsquo;s projects have been shown in various exhibitions at institutions, including the Design Museum, the Royal Academy of Arts and the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) in London. In 2012 and 2016, they were presented at the International Architecture Biennale in Venice. Mr. Arolat served on the Aga&nbsp;Khan Award for Architecture Master Jury in 2016 and as a Steering Committee member in 2019.</span></p>

Ms Batayneh got her degree in architecture from the University of Texas at Arlington. Over her long and distinguished career, Ms Batayneh has led multidisciplinary teams on large-scale international and regional projects in the USA, Pakistan, Cyprus, Saudi Arabia, Egypt and the UAE. In addition to her passion for applying creativity, design and innovation to enhance the built environment, she is actively engaged in social initiatives through national and international commissions and boards.</span></p>
        <p>Ms Batayneh was selected as a member of the Amman Commission, which was entrusted with developing the greater Amman Masterplan. She is a founding member of the Jordan Green Building Council and the Middle East Leadership Association. She is also a member of the Board of Trustees at the King Abdullah II Center for Excellence. She was the first president of Jordan&rsquo;s Business and Professional Women&rsquo;s Association and served as a jury member on the Women in Business Cartier Awards. She was recognised as the Leading Arab Woman Architect by the Federation of Arab Architects and Engineers.</p>
        <p>maisam&rsquo;s work has won numerous global awards, including the&nbsp;<em>ArchitzerA+ Popular Choice Award&nbsp;</em>in 2015,&nbsp;<em>LEAF Award</em>&nbsp;in 2014 (for &ldquo;A Gateway to Petra&rdquo;) and multiple&nbsp;<em>Arabian Property Awards</em>. maisam&rsquo;s work was also shortlisted for the World Architectural Festival (WAF) for the &ldquo;Aqaba Bus Terminal&rdquo; in 2009, &ldquo;A Gateway to Petra&rdquo; in 2012 and the &ldquo;Petra Museum&rdquo; in 2015. maisam won the World Architecture Festival&rsquo;s Future Projects for &ldquo;School in a Park&rdquo; in 2019.</p>
        <p>Ms Batayneh joined the Board of the LafargeHolcim Foundation for Sustainable Construction in January 2020. She served as a member of the regional jury for Middle East Africa and is a Jury member of the Global LafargeHolcim Awards.</p>

<p>Sir David Chipperfield is a practising architect and founder of David Chipperfield Architects. He studied architecture at the Kingston School of Art and the Architectural Association in London. He established David Chipperfield Architects in 1985 after working for Douglas Stephen, Richard Rogers and Norman Foster. He later set up offices in Berlin, Shanghai and Milan. The practice has built over 100 projects for both the private and public sectors.</p>

<p>Among the practice&rsquo;s major completed works are the rebuilding of the Neues Museum in Berlin; an MBA building for the HEC Paris School of Management; the Museo Jumex in Mexico City; a redevelopment of the Royal Academy of Arts in London; the Amorepacific Headquarters in Seoul; and an extension building for the Kunsthaus Zurich.</p>

<p>David Chipperfield Architects has received numerous awards for design excellence, including the RIBA Stirling Prize in 2007 for &ldquo;The Museum of Modern Literature&rdquo; in Marbach, Germany, and both the Mies van der Rohe Award (European Union Prize for Contemporary Architecture) and the Deutscher Architekturpreis in 2011 for the &ldquo;Neues Museum&rdquo; in Berlin.</p>

<p>David Chipperfield himself has received the RIBA Royal Gold Medal for Architecture, Praemium Imperiale, the Heinrich Tessenow Gold Medal, the Wolf Foundation Prize in the Arts, and the Grand DAI Award for Building Culture. In 2010, he was awarded the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany. In the UK, he was knighted for services to architecture in 2010 and appointed a member of the Order of the Companions of Honour in 2021. David curated the 13th International Architecture Exhibition of the Venice Biennale in 2012; served as 2016-2017 Mentor for Architecture for the Rolex Mentor and Prot&eacute;g&eacute; Arts Initiative; and was the 2020 Guest Editor of the architecture and design magazine Domus. In 2017, he founded Fundaci&oacute;n RIA, a private, non-profit entity, to research and support sustainable development in Galicia, Spain. David served on the Aga Khan Award for Architecture Master Jury in 2019.</p>

Prior to his appointment at Columbia, Professor Diagne taught philosophy at Cheikh Anta Diop University in Dakar, Senegal, for 20 years before joining Northwestern University in 2002 as a professor in the departments of Philosophy and Religion, with an affiliation to the Program of African Studies.</p>
        <p>He is the author of numerous works in the fields of the history of algebraic logic, Islamic philosophy and philosophy in Africa. His research focuses on the history of philosophy and algebraic logic, the history of Islamic philosophy and African philosophy. At the heart of his philosophical work is a reflection on . He has published numerous articles and several books on topics ranging from Mamluk architecture to Antique Syria, 19th-century Cairo, Orientalism, and urbicide. His most recent books are&nbsp;</span><i><span>&lsquo;Imarat al-Mudun al-Mayyita (The Architecture of the Dead Cities)&nbsp;</span></i><span>(2018), and an online book,&nbsp;</span><i><span>The Destruction of Cultural Heritage: From Napol&eacute;on to ISIS</span></i><span>, co-edited with Pamela Karimi (2016). His book on the 15th-century Egyptian historian al-Maqrizi will come out in early 2022. He regularly contributes to several Arabic newspapers, serves on the boards of various cultural and educational organisations, and consults with international design firms on projects in the Islamic World.     <p>Marina Tabassum is the principal of Marina Tabassum Architects (MTA), founded in 2005 and based in Dhaka, Bangladesh. She graduated in 1995 from the Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology and co-founded URBANA the same year. Notable projects from the partnership include the Independence Monument of Bangladesh and Liberation War Museum, which was completed in 2013. The project &ldquo;A5 Pavilion Apartment&rdquo; was shortlisted for the Aga Khan Award for Architecture in 2004.</p>
    <p>Ms Tabassum is the Academic Director at the Bengal Institute for Architecture, Landscapes and Settlements. She received an honorary doctorate from the Technical University of Munich in 2020. She has taught advanced design studios at the Harvard University Graduate School of Design, the Technical University Delft in The Netherlands, the University of Texas and at BRAC University in Bangladesh.</p>
    <p>Marina Tabassum was named among the top 10 thinkers of the world in 2020 by Prospect magazine, (United Kingdom), recognised for creating buildings in tune with their natural environments while embracing the design challenges posed by the environment. She founded and chaired F.A.C.E Bangladesh, a foundation dedicated to helping climate victims and ultra-low-income communities of the coastal areas of Bangladesh by providing 200 square feet (18.5 square metres) mobile modular houses designed by her office, MTA.</p>
    <p><span style="background-color: transparent; font-family: inherit; font-size: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-variant-ligatures: inherit; font-variant-caps: inherit; font-weight: inherit; letter-spacing: 0px;">Ms Tabassum is a member of the Board of Directors of Prokritee, a fair-trade organisation that employs thousands of Bangladeshi women artisans through the export of hand-crafted products all over the world.</span></p>
    <p><span>In 2004, Ms Tabassum received the&nbsp;</span><i><span>Ananya Awar</span></i><span>, which recognises exceptional achievements of women in Bangladesh. She also received the&nbsp;</span><i><span>Jameel Prize</span></i><span>&nbsp;in 2018, which was hosted by the Victoria and Albert Museum. She is the first architect to win the Prize, which celebrates art and design from the Islamic world. She received the&nbsp;</span><i><span>Aga&nbsp;Khan Award for Architecture&nbsp;</span></i><span>in 2016 for the Bait ur Rouf Mosque in Dhaka.         <p>Sarah M. Whiting has been the Dean and Josep Llu&iacute;s Sert Professor of Architecture at the Harvard University Graduate School of Design since 2019. She served as the Dean of Rice University's School of Architecture from 2010 to 2019. She is also a design principal and co-founder of WW Architecture.</p>
        <p>Professor Whiting received a Bachelor of Arts degree in architecture, urban history and theory from Yale University, a Master of Architecture from Princeton University in 1990, and a Doctor of Philosophy in the History and Theory of Architecture from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 2001. Professor Whiting worked with the Office for Metropolitan Architecture in Rotterdam, The Netherlands, and with Peter Eisenman in New York. She has taught design, history, theory and criticism at additional institutions, including Princeton University, the Illinois Institute of Technology, the University of Kentucky and the University of Florida. She frequently lectures throughout the US and abroad, and regularly serves as a critic of architecture and urban design.</p>
        <p>Professor Whiting&rsquo;s research is broadly interdisciplinary, with the built environment at its core. An expert in architectural theory and urbanism, she has particular interests in modern and contemporary architecture&rsquo;s relationship with politics, economics and society, and how the built environment shapes the nature of public life. Her work has been published in leading journals and collections. She is also the founding editor of <em>Point</em>, a book series aimed at shaping contemporary discussions in architecture and urbanism.</p>
        <p>Professor Whiting&rsquo;s writings have been published in journals ranging from&nbsp;<em>ANY to Wired</em>, as well as in collections including&nbsp;<em>Shaping the City</em>,&nbsp;<em>Mies in America</em>,&nbsp;<em>Six Authors in Search of an Architect</em>, and&nbsp;<em>An Architecture for all Senses: The Work of Eileen Gray</em>. She edited&nbsp;<em>Differences</em>, a collection of essays by Ignasi de Sol&agrave;-Morales, and served as reviews editor for the journal<em>&nbsp;Assemblage</em>&nbsp;from 1996 to 2001.
