Lisbon, Portugal, 12 June 2014 - His Highness the Aga Khan visited Lisbon at the invitation of the North-South Centre of the Council of Europe, to receive the 2013 North-South Prize. The prize, which was awarded by the President of Portugal in a ceremony to be held at the Portuguese Parliament, honours the Aga Khan’s commitment to furthering understanding of what constitutes a more pluralistic society and for his achievements in improving the quality of life of vulnerable populations around the world through the work of the Aga Khan Development Network. During his visit to Portugal, the Aga Khan met with President Cavaco Silva at the Presidential Palace, with the President of the Assembly of the Republic, Maria Assunção Esteves at the Parliament, with Prime Minister Pedro Passos Coelho at his official residence, with the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Rui Machete and the Deputy Prime Minister Paolo Portas.
