Education

In 2000, His Highness the Aga Khan initiated the establishment of the Aga Khan Academies. Maputo is the third campus, after Hyderabad (India) and Mombasa (Kenya).

The Academy’s 22-hectare site was kindly donated by the Mozambican government and was designed by leading architects. The Academy offers students an inspirational learning environment, and residential and sports facilities for students aged 3 to 18.

The Academy provides students with education of the highest international standard in order to prepare them for lives of leadership and service, and to succeed in a globally competitive world.

The Academy strives to create a balance between academic demands, sports, cultural activities and community life.

Admission to the Academy is based on merit, regardless of socio-economic background or a family’s ability to pay. Financial aid is available to students with demonstrated need.

Academy students at each stage of their academic journey study in purpose-built classrooms, labs, workshops and other spaces for discovery, tailored to their needs.

The Academy’s curriculum is built on the framework of the International Baccalaureate (IB) and has been accredited as an IB World School. The programme promotes academic rigour through themes designed to give students the skills to lead in their fields globally and locally by promoting international awareness, social responsibility, creativity and high ethical standards.

An Early Years programme at the Academy in Maputo welcomes children aged 3 to 5 years. This programme lays the foundations for a happy, balanced and healthy life – helping girls and boys from a young age to relate to others and manage life’s ups and downs, and embrace new ideas and cultures.

A talented, experienced and diverse team of educators has been selected from a global pool, including Mozambican nationals, some with international experience. All teachers have access to the Academy’s Professional Development Centre, which develops teachers – of the highest quality – who are committed to both the all-round development of young people and to their own professional growth.

From an early age, Academy students learn to care about the people and environment around them. Through collaborating with community partners, students have engaged in various service projects, ranging from beach clean-ups and developing numeracy, literacy and technology-based projects with partner schools.

On-campus living at the Academy complements and extends the academic experience. The residential programme includes a broad selection of activities and leadership opportunities to enhance students’ learning and growth.

The academic curriculum is complemented by artistic, cultural, athletic and community service initiatives that are designed to provide a well-rounded and enduring experience.

The Academy’s programme is bilingual; English and Portuguese are both languages of instruction. In addition, students are encouraged to study a foreign language to develop their minds and foster an appreciation and respect for other nationalities, cultures and intellectual traditions.

Extensive sports facilities and spaces for artistic and cultural expression at the Academy encourage students to explore their passions inside and outside the classroom.

The Academy aims to develop future leaders with the skills, knowledge and dispositions to support positive development in their societies. It works toward this by admitting exceptional young people from all backgrounds and providing them with a rigorous and relevant education of the highest international standard.
