Nairobi, Kenya, 22 May 2005 - His Highness the Aga Khan emphasises the importance of press freedom and of investing in African journalism, at the opening ceremony of the International Press Institute (IPI), World Congress and 54th General Assembly. The conference was officially opened by H.E. Hon. Mwai Kibaki, President of Kenya. The IPI was founded in 1950 in New York by a small group of newspaper editors from 15 countries, who recognised the need for a truly international press freedom organisation. Today IPI is an authoritative grouping of editors, media executives and leading journalists from newspapers, magazines, broadcasting organisations and news agencies in over 120 countries. IPI holds its World Congress in a different country each year, thus underlining its global perspective.
