The Institute for Educational Development (AKU-IED) in Pakistan was established in 1993 in response to the declining quality of education in Pakistan and other developing countries. The aim was to develop models that would illustrate how education, even in the context of limited resources, can be improved in a sustainable manner. Since then AKU-IED has implemented tailor-made models and engaged with global best practices to reflect and respond to the educational needs of developing countries, particularly Pakistan.
