Islamabad, 16 December 2013 — His Highness the Aga Khan discussed development issues in a series of high-level meetings in Pakistan’s capital, Islamabad. During his first official trip to Pakistan in four years, the Aga Khan met with Pakistan’s president, Mamnoon Hussain, and Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif. President Hussain expressed appreciation for the Aga Khan’s personal services to the people of Pakistan, citing the impact of the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN) in education, health, poverty alleviation, and improvement in quality of life. Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif described the AKDN as a model for other development organisations. He pointed out that there were many areas that would benefit from broader AKDN involvement, highlighting the needs of Pakistan’s energy sector in particular. The Aga Khan Development Network has been active in Pakistan for several decades working in a number of key development sectors. Later in the week, the Aga Khan is scheduled to address the convocation ceremony at the Aga Khan University (AKU) in Karachi – the main city of the Southern province of Sindh. His Highness the Aga Khan is the university’s founder and its Chancellor.
