Penang and Kuala Lumpur, 29 October 2011 – Five Malaysian recipients of the Aga Khan Award for Architecture, and the Award’s Director, Mr. Farrokh Derakhshani, participated in a one-day seminar on architecture held in Penang on 29 October 2011.
The Malaysian recipients—Dr. Ken Yeang, Professor Ar. Jimmy Lim, Kamil Merican, Ar. William Khoo and Hamdan Abdul Majeed—all spoke at the seminar, entitled "Implicate & Explicate", which will explore the variety of projects that received the 2010 Aga Khan Award for Architecture and their shared meanings.
Steering Committee member Farshid Moussavi and architect Laurence Loh also participated in the seminar. The seminar was followed by a discussion on "Penang: Past, Present, Future", which explored the evolution of Penang’s architecture and discussed responses to future growth.
The one-day event was held in cooperation with the Malaysian Institute of Architects and “Think City”, a subsidiary of Khazanah Nasional in charge of implementing the preservation of historic George Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Public Lecture by Farrokh Derakhshani
Aga Khan Award for Architecture director, Farrokh Derakhshani, also gave a talk at the Faculty of the Built Environment of the University of Malaya, on the topic of “The Aga Khan Awards for Architecture: Challenges & Solutions”.
Public Lectures by Farshid Moussavi and Li Xiaodong
On Monday, 31 October, the Award hosted two public lectures at the School of Architecture, Building and Design, Taylor’s University Lakeside Campus in Petaling Jaya. The first lecture on “Form and Ornament” was presented by Award Steering Committee member Farshid Moussavi, architect and educator and principal of Farshid Moussavi Architecture (FMA).
The second lecture, “Towards a Reflexive Regionalism” was given by Professor Li Xiaodong, Chair of the Architecture Programme at the School of Architecture, Tsinghua University, Beijing, and 2010 Award recipient for the Bridge School in Xiashi, Fujian Province. The public lectures are being held in cooperation with Monier, DoMA Collective Sdn Bhd and Taylor’s School of Architecture, Building and Design.
