Nineteen projects from 15 countries have been shortlisted for the 2025 Aga Khan Award for Architecture – the first cycle since its founder, Prince Karim Al Husseini, Aga Khan IV, died in February at 88. It is currently chaired by his son, Prince Rahim Aga Khan IV. Established in 1977, the $1 million prize – shared among multiple recipients –is one of the largest in architecture – honours that respond to the practical needs and cultural aspirations of communities with a significant Muslim presence. This year’s finalists, whittled down from 369 nominations, had to be completed between 2018 and 2023 and in use for at least one year to qualify for submission. Notable works include an accessible modular structural system conceived by past winner Marina Tabassum Architects of Dhaka; a brutalist former government building in Doha turned hotel by David Chipperfield Architects; a Kenyan youth entrepreneurship hub designed by another past winner, Kere Architecture; and a climate-sensitive “eco-urban enclave” led by the Pakistan Heritage Foundation with 2023 Griba Gold Medalist Yasmin Lari.
