Mushtari Saidikova grew up in the Pamirs, in the city of Khorog. She is currently a PhD student at the University of Cambridge, researching atmospheric chemistry and volcanology and working under the supervision of one of the world's leading volcanologists. Many reacted sceptically to her Cambridge application saying she had no publications, that the field wasn't right, and that her chances were slim. Her admission was made possible, in part, by the University of Central Asia's Central Asian Faculty Development Program (CAFDP). Mushtari went through several stages of the selection process including numerous interviews and was chosen as a successful candidate.
