Aga Khan High School in Kampala, Uganda was recently named among the top 10 schools around the world competing for the 2025 World’s Best School Prize for overcoming adversity. According to Ms Racheal Mwagale, the executive director of Junior Achievement Uganda, the school is the only one in Africa that is competing with nine other schools around the world. The announcement marked the culmination of a four-month search for 10 schools around the world that have excelled in aspects such as community collaboration, environmental action, innovation, and supporting healthy lives. “Our students have participated in so many community activities such as planting trees; we have a supportive learning environment for them to create their community projects where they collect money and buy food for the needy. Through this, they develop the spirit of empathy and care for the community,” said Mr Fred Tukahirwa, the principal of Aga Khan High School. Kampala faces major socioeconomic challenges and culturally fractured communities. Aga Khan High School in Kampala is changing outcomes for vulnerable, displaced, and refugee students through its adversity-focused initiatives.
