The AKDN opened the phase two expansion of the Aga Khan Hospital in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, which is expected to provide services to over one million patients annually. The facility, first opened in 1964, was expanded from a 32 bed facility to a 74 bed hospital in 2000. With the second phase expansion it becomes a 170- bed tertiary and teaching hospital. Speaking during the opening, Princess Zahra said it will enable patients across Tanzania to access affordable and quality healthcare at their doorstep.
