The Aga Khan University has set aside funds to support student projects that are innovative, target environmental conservation and address the effects of climate change. In a recent interview, Dr Cliff Aliga, the patron of the university’s environmental club, said the university is set to start funding a student water purification project in northern Uganda where they use sand, charcoal and some chlorine to purify water for domestic use. The university is encouraging students to come up with innovative ideas to compete with students across the network in Tanzania, Kenya, the United Kingdom, Pakistan and Canada. According to Mr Patrick James Nek, the president of the university’s environmental club, due to excessive pollution and environmental degradation, a decision was made to commemorate World Environment Day by implementing the University President’s vision and ensuring that students and staff sign pledges and commitments they will undertake to conserve and protect the environment.
