On March 8 each year, Uganda marks International Women’s Day by honouring what women and girls have accomplished around the country. Amid this celebration, this year’s theme, “Give to Gain,” highlights the need to reflect on emerging challenges, including how Artificial Intelligence (AI) is transforming Uganda. In Uganda, AI tools form part of everyday life. Students and professionals now rely on Large Language Model (LLM) chatbots such as OpenAI’s ChatGPT for research, communication and administrative work. Students from Aga Khan High School and Kampala International School Uganda last year developed AI prototypes aimed at improving road safety and healthcare. Their innovations included an AI app capable of detecting pneumonia from medical scans and another designed to identify distracted driving, demonstrating how young innovators are leveraging AI to address local challenges.
