Aga Khan University (AKU) has launched Tanzania's first master’s programme in Advanced Practice in Nursing (APN), marking a significant advancement in the country's primary healthcare sector. This initiative aims to enhance the role of nurses in delivering quality healthcare, particularly in underserved areas. The APN programme is designed to equip nurses with advanced clinical and leadership skills, enabling them to take on expanded roles in community clinics, regional hospitals and national health institutions. The inaugural class includes 15 nursing practitioners and leaders, such as the Director of Nursing Services at Muhimbili National Hospital and several regional and district nursing heads. Complementing the APN programme, AKU has also inaugurated the Centre for Innovation in Medical Education (CIME), Tanzania’s first practical innovation centre for medical education. CIME integrates technology, simulation, and inter-professional education to bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and real-world patient care.
