Plans to restore the Bibi-Khanym Mosque (Bibi-Xonim masjidi) in Samarkand, Uzbekistan in collaboration with the Aga Khan Trust for Culture, were presented at an event on cultural heritage and museum development. The first phase covers documentation and research of the monument, archaeological and engineering surveys, analysis of building materials, structural modelling and preparing design solutions. It also includes training for local specialists. Later stages will conserve the main dome and adjacent structures, improve the surrounding area and create a museum exhibition. The complex was built between 1399 and 1404, during Samarkand's Timurid period.
