Dr Miriam Mutebi, breast surgical oncologist, and Dr Radovan Boca, reconstructive surgeon at the Aga Khan University Hospital (AKUH) in Nairobi , write that breast cancer is the most common type of cancer and most women diagnosed with breast cancer are likely to have surgery as a mode of treatment. AKUH was the first hospital in East and Central Africa to successfully do DIEP (Deep Inferior Epigastric Perforator - a standard of care for autologous reconstruction) procedure recently, which has now benefitted a number of patients.
