Cotton farmers in India using water-saving drip irrigation techniques have radically cut water use while boosting revenues. C&A Foundation has stepped in to supplement the remaining costs for farmers in the water-stressed region of Gujarat through the introduction of a community managed financing mechanism called the Drip Pool Programme. Created in partnership with the Aga Khan Rural Support Programme (India) (AKRSP-I), the programme provides interest-free loans to smallholder and marginal cotton farmers so that they can afford to buy and install drip irrigation units. It has been extended to four districts in Saurashtra. The latest phase of the programme aims to reach an additional 9,750 farmers by 2020, and continues to be implemented by AKRSP-I.
