Last month, Sunder Nursery reached a major milestone of 5 million visitors—representing the total footfall since the park opened six years ago, according to the Aga Khan Trust for Culture (AKTC), which developed and now manages the site. High time to statistically dissect a destination whose many gardens and monuments have become the capital’s refuge. The park contains 15,000 trees and 300 species, ten of which are not found anywhere else in India. 150 bird species call the park’s 90 acres home. There are also 5 wells, 2 lakes, and 2 swimming pool-sized underground rainwater harvesting tanks (over the years, the park’s water table level has risen from 10 metres below the surface to 2 meters). The park’s most striking monument to water must be the beautifully named Hauz-i-Nilofar, Delhi’s only existing Mughal-era lotus pond.
