In Kisumu County, a malaria-prone area in western Kenya, patients line up to buy Chinese-made anti-malarial injections, their faces filled with hope for health. Robert Opoka, professor of paediatrics and child health at the Aga Khan University (AKU) in Nairobi, said that China-Africa cooperation in health research, technology transfer, talent training and innovation has changed the rules of the game in the fight against malaria. "China has been able to extend its experience in managing malaria and producing malaria treatment drugs to Africa." According to the World Malaria Report 2023, there were approximately 249 million cases of malaria and 608,000 deaths from malaria in the world in 2022, with 94% of the cases and 95% of the deaths in Africa. Children under the age of 5 years accounted for approximately 78% of the total deaths from malaria in Africa. In other words, on average, one African child under the age of 5 years dies from malaria every minute or so.
