The hiring of linguistic and cultural mediators for schools was announced by the Portuguese government in 2024 to improve the inclusion of the growing number of foreign students. Now, a training plan for these professionals will move forward, which should start this school year. Two entities were chosen to provide this training: the Aga Khan Foundation (AKF) and the Gonçalo da Silveira Foundation, which aims "to provide the development and strengthening of skills for the exercise of mediation functions by these professionals." AKF presented a plan that includes one training cycle per year of 30 hours of online and in-person theoretical and practical training, plus 30 hours of independent work and the organisation of a national showcase to present best practices. Mediators will be equipped with knowledge, strategies and educational mediation tools that promote the welcoming, inclusion, integration and educational success of migrant students in schools, as well as greater integration and involvement of their families in the educational community.
