Writing as a letter to Sufi saint Hazrat Ali Hajwiri, Lahore-based academic Sadia Pasha Kamran calls for Lahore's historic buildings to be preserved as "active, living and accessible" spaces rather than "static museums, freezing them in time as sterile spectacles." She notes that restoration initiatives by organisations such as the WCLA and the Aga Khan Foundation have revitalised significant landmarks, including the Picture Wall of the Lahore Fort, the frescoes of Mariam Zamani mosque, and the kashikari at Wazir Khan mosque. However, she warns that many historic havelis "are being demolished or revamped without any sense," and cautions that in the rush to modernise, "the actual material and spiritual integrity of these spaces" must not be compromised.
