Dr. Alex Awiti, Vice Provost of the Aga Khan University, writes that meritocracy assumes that all achievement is unaided externally and is due solely to individual effort. The belief that the world is meritocratic is nearly universal. However, meritocracy attributes nothing to fortuitous circumstances that feature in success stories. He says that in Kenya, different questions need to be asked, for example how to make life better for everyone, regardless of their background or education.
