The first Ismaili Muslim cultural center built in the United States — and only the seventh in the world — is set to open by the end of the year. The Ismaili Center Houston has been in the works for years and is located at the southeast corner of Allen Parkway and Montrose Boulevard. The Washington, D.C.-based Aga Khan Foundation USA has owned the 11-acre site in Montrose since 2006. Ismaili Center Houston is designed to serve as both a place of prayer and a venue for dialogue, culture and education among people of all backgrounds. “The center’s aim is to foster mutual understanding between different communities and cultures: to invite Ismailis and non-Ismailis to connect through shared events such as lectures, conferences, music recitals, and art exhibitions that nurture curiosity, celebrate difference, and encourage conversation,” Omar Samji, spokesperson for the Ismaili Center.
