“Life on Land,” the focus of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goal 15, has faced significant challenges in recent years. Devastating floods, prolonged droughts, melting glaciers, and deadly heat waves: the planet and its people appear locked in conflict. “It is understandable for individuals or institutions to feel both helpless and hopeless in the face of these global challenges. Yet, as we mark World Environment Day on June 5th, I am filled with optimism,” says Dr. Sulaiman Shahabuddin, President of Aga Khan University (AKU), in an opinion piece. “It might come as a surprise that AKU,known for its early focus on human health, is deeply engaged in environmental issues. In fact, planetary and population health are fundamentally intertwined. While AKU continues to work on the frontlines to mobilise critical healthcare following natural disasters, environmental protection, climate action, and sustainability are integral components of our strategic plan and central to all our work.”
