Workers engaged in a variety of activities for years: laying foundations, working with soil and bringing in plants, trees and shrubs from around Egypt. More than 250 royal palms were planted with another 100 date palms. In 2005, the Al-Azhar Park was inaugurated. What was once described as a “hill of debris” and “spillway of garbage” is now referred as “breath of fresh air”, “paradise”, “haven”. Additionally, the citizens of Darb al-Ahmar have found a renewed appreciation of their identity as they relate to the historical monuments, buildings, and objects which have been restored in their neighbourhood.
