Is it really possible that justice in a fort means death? The Altat Fort, perched on a high cliff above the Hunza River in the heart of the Hunza Valley, offers a historical answer to this question. The fort is believed to be around 900 years old and was the early residence of the Mir family of Hunza, from where they ruled the entire valley. This fort was not just a military outpost but also a centre for monitoring trade activities due to its proximity to the Silk Road. Over time, the fort fell into disrepair, but was later restored and revived by the Aga Khan Trust for Culture. Today, Altit Qila is not just a stone building, but a complete story of strength, fear, strategy, and survival, reminding us of how deep a history these silent mountain civilisations hold within themselves.
