For the first time since his accession as head of the Ismaili community, Prince Rahim Aga Khan presided over the prestigious architecture competition created by his late father. This 16th edition took place in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, honouring seven projects from countries including Iran, Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Egypt. Nearly a thousand guests attended, including Kyrgyz leaders, Ismaili representatives, and cultural figures such as Irina Bokova (former UNESCO Director-General) and Henri Loyrette (former Louvre Director, now adviser to the Aga Khan Trust for Culture). Kyrgyz Prime Minister Adylbek Kasymaliev recalled that “this prize is not a mere display of wealth but a necessity and responsibility toward future generations.” Prince Rahim emphasised continuity, noting: “Architecture is not just about building. It is a way to improve people’s quality of life. At its best, it must reflect the plurality of cultural traditions and the diversity of community needs. Each generation must pass on a healthy, sustainable environment to its successors.” The $1 million award recognised designs distinguished by sustainability, social impact, and community engagement.
