International Museum Day is celebrated every year on May 18 and coordinated by the International Council of Museums. The day highlights the significant role of museums in preserving culture, history and knowledge. Inaugurated in July 2024, the Sunken Museum is India’s first underground museum within a UNESCO World Heritage Site—Humayun’s Tomb in New Delhi. Developed by the Aga Khan Trust for Culture (AKTC) in collaboration with the Archaeological Survey of India, it blends modern design with the historic Mughal garden setting, offering a unique model of heritage conservation.
