Prince Rahim Aga Khan V’s visit to Hyderabad highlighted the longstanding relationship between the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN) and Telangana, including the Network’s significant contribution to cultural heritage conservation. A central focus had been the Aga Khan Trust for Culture’s (AKTC) work at the Qutb Shahi heritage precinct, where conservation has combined the restoration of historic monuments with the renewal of their surrounding landscape. The 106-acre site, containing almost 100 monuments, had benefited from the conservation of mausoleums, mosques and stepwells, alongside extensive environmental improvements. AKTC’s conservation work had extended to important Hyderabad heritage sites, including the Paigah Tombs. These initiatives demonstrate how protecting architecture and landscapes could support cultural identity, traditional craftsmanship, environmental sustainability and community development.
