Kabul is far from being a safe haven for women. But today the security of the Afghan women has been taken into consideration inside gardens and public parks, by providing them exclusive access on certain days of the week. Luis Monreal, the General Manager of the Aga Khan Trust for Culture (AKTC) who is tasked, amongst others, with the restauration and the rehabilitation of a number of historic places in Kabul (including the Bagh-e-Babur gardens), explains that public spaces are places of expression. For the Director, parks and gardens are “important social spaces” within which a war-torn society “can help heal wounds and scratches” of citizens. Rethinking “the urban network”, is important in order to unify the people. This is the reason why more than half a dozen gardens and parks inside Kabul have been restored so as to be much more inclusive.
