Manifesting to act as a bridge between the cultural, historical and the spiritual influences that exist in and around the 16th century Humayun’s Tomb precinct, the Humayun Tomb World Heritage Site Museum is now open in the capital. Sitting underground, resembling a baoli, the museum will allow Delhiites and tourists the chance to explore the second Mughal emperor Humayun’s life, his travels, interests in astrology, art, architecture and more. It connects Sunder Nursery and Humayun’s Tomb complex, allowing people the opportunity to spend time in an area steeped in history and contextualise Delhi’s Nizamuddin area. The museum brings the 25-year-long conservation work and research on Humayun to life, with over 700 artefacts and relics on display. Archana Saad Akhtar of the Aga Khan Trust for Culture (AKTC), says, “Figuratively sandwiched between Babur and Akbar, Humayun hasn’t been discussed or understood much. The museum will help people understand the World Heritage Site, its setting, and put the history of the area in context. Through the museum, we aim to enhance visitor’s heritage experience, so that people learn about the significance of this area.”
