Professor Lukoye Atwoli, Dean of the Aga Khan University (AKU) Medical College, East Africa, was formally handed over the 2026 International Presidency of the World Health Regional Meeting during this year’s summit in Berlin. This milestone marks the first time in history that the World Health Summit (WHS) International Presidency transitions to Africa, underscoring the continent’s growing influence, innovation, and leadership in global health. The symbolic passing of the WHS baton, from NIMS University, New Delhi, India, to Aga Khan University, Nairobi, Kenya, represents not only a geographic shift but also a deepening commitment to inclusive, globally informed health solutions. In his acceptance remarks, Professor Atwoli reaffirmed AKU’s collective commitment to championing transformative health systems and evidence-based solutions addressing the continent’s most pressing health challenges. “This transition symbolises global recognition of Africa’s role in shaping a healthier, more equitable future for all,” he said.
