Mwananchi Communications Limited (MCL) has partnered with the Aga Khan Hospital to conduct screenings for breast and cervical cancer among its employees. The screening campaign also involves prostate cancer tests among men. Speaking about the launch of the testing campaign, MCL managing director, Mr Bakari Machumu, said cancer testing was chosen because the disease affects many people. He said the initiatives are part of the efforts to empower women in society and within the company. “Statistics show that 60 to 70 percent of people who are diagnosed with cancer are detected late, which makes it difficult to treat,” said Mr Machumu. The Aga Khan Health Services Tanzania chief executive officer, Mr Sisawo Konteh, said cancer is one of the fastest-growing diseases in the country, while lack of awareness remains one of the biggest challenges facing society. Over 800,000 women were examined through the Tanzania Comprehensive Cancer Project (TCCP) cooperation between the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN) and the government of Tanzania.
