Dr Nancy Booker, Head of the Graduate School of Media and Communication at Aga Khan University (AKU GSMC) in Kenya, emphasises the importance of gender equality in media during a three-day training session for journalists in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. She states that gender equality should begin within media organisations, encompassing staffing, unbiased reporting, and the effective implementation of gender policies. Dr Booker highlights that equality starts in journalism, including the selection of images and ensuring both women and men are represented equally, without favouring one gender over the other. She asserts that gender equality is a human right, and a world striving for progress should not leave any gender behind, as this would hinder development. She further notes that achieving gender equality is not solely the responsibility of media outlets but requires collaborative efforts across society. Journalists, she says, should recognise that all individuals are equal and become champions of reporting that upholds gender equality.
