According to the science of child development, the base for complete mental health is built in the initial years of life when children gain good early experiences through their relationships with parents, caregivers, other relatives, peers, and teachers who influence the construction of brain development. During this developmental process, disturbances can spoil children’s abilities for learning and connecting to others, with lifetime effects ranging from the failure to complete high school to confinement to poverty. Considerations for refining children’s settings, associations, and involvements in the early years are essential, according to a faculty member in the Aga Khan University’s Professional Development Centre (AKU-PDCN) in a recent op-ed.
