Physician-investigators at Aga Khan University Hospital in Nairobi, a private non-profit hospital and trial site, are currently participating in a Phase 1 clinical trial to investigate the effectiveness of a new cancer drug. With hopes that the drug could take on and help alleviate one of the most challenging health challenges faced in Kenya and elsewhere, the cancer is associated with the Kirsten rat sarcoma virus (KRAS) gene. Involved with the modulation of cell division, Prof Mansoor Saleh, director of the Clinical Research Unit at Aga Khan says KRAS is found in all cells of the body and is responsible for the growth and survival of normal cells.
