In India, many of NGOs have already begun work to cope with rural distress. Tinni Sawhney, CEO of Aga Khan Foundation (AKF) India, says food is not such a big problem since the public distribution system is functioning and most villagers have ration cards and those that do not, are being assisted by AKF. Many villagers continue to live off vegetables and home grown crops. When the lockdown was announced, the AKF activated an SMS service to self help and farmers’ groups ; six messages were prepared in Hindi on social distancing and the need to wear masks even during harvesting.
