A study by researchers at the Aga Khan University (AKU) Karachi claim that only 5% of children suffering from mild pneumonia require antibiotics for the treatment, and with improved ways to diagnose and treat pneumonia, thousands of children can be prevented from taking unnecessary antibiotics. "Resistance to commonly used antibiotics is a growing concern among infectious disease specialists and other physicians," says Dr Fyezah Jehan, the study’s lead investigator and a specialist in paediatric infectious diseases at AKU.
