Researchers at the Aga Khan University (Pakistan) and the University of Virginia (USA) are collaborating on an innovative project that will harness the power of artificial intelligence to understand a particularly complex disorder of the intestine, environmental enteric dysfunction (EED). Dr Sana Syed, an assistant professor in paediatrics at the University of Virginia and Dr Asad Ali, associate dean for research at the Aga Khan University, will now apply ‘deep learning’, a type of artificial intelligence, to train a computer programme to analyse microscopic images of tissue located deep inside the small intestine.
