A graduate of the Aga Khan University Hospital, Dr. Jawaid Ali, has made a major breakthrough in leading to a cure of dementia. The disease is accompanied by changes at the molecular level leading to non-functioning proteins known as amyloid plaques or neurofibrillary tangles as Dr. Jawaid Ali mentions in his work. The breakthrough achievement by this Dr. Jawaid Ali and his fellows is that they found the point in the pathway responsible for the production of these non-functioning deteriorating proteins. They discovered that by manipulating certain enzymes and decreasing their production, the normal Micro RNAs (small non-coding ribonucleic acids) could be overproduced, replicated, and translated into normal proteins.
