The residents of the mountainous Arkari Valley in Lower Chitral have stated that the realignment and reconstruction of the road to their area has brought about a 'revolution' in their lives. According to the villagers, the 32-kilometre road was realigned by the Aga Khan Rural Support Programme as part of its Central Asian Poverty Programme. The road has heralded progress and prosperity for the valley by connecting it with the outside world and facilitated farm-to-market transportation, encouraging people to cultivate potatoes, beans, and tomatoes on a commercial scale. According to villagers, the additional finance received by farmers contributed towards improving their standard of living. The residents said women had equally benefited from the road project as different organisations reached the valley to impart training to them on kitchen gardening, honey bee keeping and greenhouse farming.
