The Revitalization of Muharraq area in Bahrain is one of the most promising projects recently selected in the shortlist of the Aga Khan Award for Architecture 2019. In order to revive this significant and historical site and to highlight its economic and social importance as well as its fundamental role in the foundation and promotion of a historical profession in Bahrain, an ambitious project was carried out by the Bahrain Authority for Culture and Antiquities over a vast area of about 330,000 square meters. While the project aimed to preserve the old and historic structures in the region, emphasis was also placed on the construction of new buildings in a sensitive approach to heritage conservation and contemporary public space planning.
