Guava juice is known for its bright pink colour and fruity, floral flavours, but it also offers some major health benefits. New research shows that drinking guava juice may benefit people with iron-deficiency anaemia by improving iron absorption. "Our research examined whether drinking guava juice alongside iron supplementation could improve haemoglobin levels more than iron alone," said Javeria Mansoor, chief resident (community medicine) at the Aga Khan University in Pakistan, and lead author of the study. "While iron supplementation is the standard treatment [for anaemia], many patients continue to have suboptimal haemoglobin levels despite taking iron tablets regularly," said Mansoor. By combining and analysing data from multiple studies, the researchers found that combining guava juice with iron supplementation was associated with a greater increase in haemoglobin than iron supplementation alone.
