Syria’s Ministry of Emergency and Disaster Management and the Aga Khan Foundation recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to boost cooperation in disaster preparedness, humanitarian response, and sustainable development. The MoU was signed by Dr Ahmad Qaziz, Assistant Minister of Emergency and Disaster Management, and Mohannad Obeido, Executive Director of the Aga Khan Foundation in Syria. The agreement sets a framework to enhance Syria’s disaster response, aligning with the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction - a 15-year global agreement adopted in 2015 to reduce disaster risk and losses in lives - and core humanitarian standards. It focuses on improving community preparedness through training, risk assessments, early warning systems, and enhancing coordination among response efforts.
