For hundreds of years, Canada’s museums have been telling stories. Behind the scenes, museum curators play a vital role in storytelling, acting as translators between artists, their creations, and the audience. “Art allows for different interpretations and that’s the joy of it,” says Marianne Fenton, special projects curator for the Aga Khan Museum in Toronto. Fenton says this year’s Toronto Biennial of Art is a prime example. In this 12-week event run every two years, artists are commissioned to create new works for a city-wide exhibition in dialogue with Toronto’s diverse local contexts. Fenton says the Aga Khan Museum will feature prominently. “Our installation is the work of one artist, and it will be a truly engaging three-dimensional experience visible to audiences inside and outside the museum,” she says.
