The phenomenon of loneliness remains under-researched in developing countries such as Pakistan, despite its significant impact on physical and mental health, as well as overall community well-being. Global studies confirm that loneliness is a major risk factor for depression, cognitive decline, heart disease and even mortality. In Pakistan, nearly 50 per cent of older adults are at risk of experiencing loneliness, with one-third likely to face social isolation. Older women are particularly vulnerable compared to men. These findings are highlighted in an article by Laila Akber Cassum, a senior instructor at the Aga Khan University (AKU) School of Nursing and Midwifery.
