According to research published in the East African Health Research Journal, Africans are losing their memory at an unprecedented rate due to chronic lifestyle diseases such as hypertension and diabetes and a lingering infectious disease burden. A 2025 study conducted at the Aga Khan University Brain and Mind Institute reveals that Kenya has no comprehensive national data on dementia and does not use standardised diagnostic tools. This gap has allowed the condition to remain largely unseen, often mistaken for a normal part of ageing. Without reliable data or widespread awareness, thousands of people are left to struggle without proper diagnosis, care, or support, quietly enduring what has become an invisible crisis.
