Stanley Badia's life is measured not by years, but by the relentless shadow of a birthmark. At 24, a vast, nodular growth that once covered his back has spread to his abdomen and thighs, dictating nearly every aspect of his existence. Badia's official diagnosis at Aga Khan Hospital in October 2023 confirmed the complexity of his case: Plexiform Neurofibromatosis with a possibility of overlapping Congenital Melanocytic Nevus (CMN). CMN is a rare genetic disease caused by a gene mutation and is profoundly misunderstood. Dr Hashim Shaukatali, a consultant dermatologist at Aga Khan Hospital, notes that CMN's incidence in an African context is less than five per cent, contributing to the high levels of ostracisation and ignorance. Badia's recent assessment offers a ray of hope.
