Education experts in Tanzania have said the country must urgently rethink its understanding of literacy if it is to prepare young people for the realities of the digital era. This debate took centre stage last week when the Aga Khan University Institute for Educational Development (AKU-IED), in partnership with the US Embassy and the Tanzania English Language Teacher Associate (TETLA), hosted International Literacy Day celebrations in Dar es Salaam. Traditional, literacy meant reading and writing, but scholars have realised that literacy is much boarder. It is not only a technical skill, but also a social and cultural practice that reflects power, identity and participation, said Dr Samuel Andema, Assistant professor from AKU-IED.
